‘Donate a Day: Work to Rebuild the Jersey Shore’ Effort Raises 11K for Sandy Victims
Tuesday, 19 February 2013 15:23

Summit, N.J. -- After the second costliest storm in U.S. history pounded New Jersey and its neighboring states last October, employees at Symbolic Systems, Inc., a small company headquartered in Summit, N.J., decided to help out in an unconventional way. The workforce sent the money from their unused vacation time to the New Jersey Relief Fund.

Through this effort, referred to as “Donate a Day: Work to Rebuild the Jersey Shore,” more than $11,000 was raised to help the victims of Super Storm Sandy.

“I think what has made ‘Donate a Day’ such a success is that our employees helped people that they know who not only suffered personal inconveniences, but also huge financial losses,” said Frank Ponzio, Symbolic’s founder and president, “and I personally thank everyone who made this project a success.”

The Symbolic staff came up with the innovative solution of “giving a day,” and employees from Symbolic’s Maryland, New Jersey and Texas locations participated.

“We wanted to do something for those who lost so much, and since time really is money, we felt that we could work and use the days’ pay to help out,” said Sally Ponzio, Symbolic’s vice president.

The New Jersey-based Symbolic staff endured challenges and hardship from the storm, which was part of the motivation to rally as a company and help financially. Like thousands of other residents, many of the employees and their family members lost power for weeks at their own homes. The company’s Tinton Falls, N.J. office was closed for a week due to flooding, leading employees to work at various remote locations.

“The ‘Donate a Day’ effort is a reflection of the great people we have on our staff,” said Frank Ponzio. “They exemplify Symbolic’s long-standing history of sharing with others.”

Symbolic also participates in the Make a Wish Foundation and the American Cancer Relay for Life, as well as providing scholarships to high school students, “adopting” families during the holidays and supporting U.S. Soldiers.

Symbolic Systems, Inc., which was started in 1968, provides Information Technology (IT), data engineering, project management, configuration management and software development services to the government, Department of Defense and industry. Symbolic specializes in military and government environments and partners with other contracting companies to provide engineering, Web 2.0, social media, information technology, logistics, operations support, knowledge management and public communications.

Symbolic issued a press release and the story is now appearing in local media.
